Turning Point in History
Slavery is a turing point in history because it is one of the biggest events in world history. There were 12 million slaves brought over to the Americas, and 645,000 brought to what is now the United States. Some slaves were brought in increasing numbers to fill the desire for labor in the Americas where land was plentiful and labor scarce. Men, women, and children signed a contract to serve a term of four to seven years, but their owners often kept them longer than that term. Slaves were increasingly brought ot the Southern colonies during the late 1600's to support an economy based on massive cash crops like tobacco, rice, and eventually cotton. By 1660, slavery was officialy regognized by law. So many people today have ancestors that were slaves or somehow were in contact with them or owned slaves. The biggest reason slavery is a turning point in history because thousands of africans were taken from their homes in africa, and brought over to the Americas where they were treated horribly and had no rights. More than 40% of the africans died on the slave ships over to the americas than they did in africa in one year.
